Padel groups: standings, tie-breaks and match order
How a padel group's standings are worked out, how tied pairs are separated and in which order to play the matches. Everything below comes from the code that ranks your groups in Padel Clash.
Points in a group
Every match gives points to both pairs.
| Result | Points |
|---|---|
| Match won | +2 |
| Match lost | +1 |
| Match lost by disqualification | −1 |
| Match lost by walkover or forfeit | −2 |
A retirement through injury counts as a normal loss: the pair played, so it scores 1 point.
Separating pairs level on points
When pairs are level on points, over all the matches of the group:
- the difference between sets won and sets lost;
- then the difference between games won and games lost;
- then the same two criteria, over only the matches between the pairs still level;
- finally, a draw of lots.
Padel Clash applies the first three criteria automatically; the draw of lots stays with the referee.
In which order should the matches be played?
Padel Clash plays each group round by round in the FFT model order: never open with the match between the two strongest pairs, keep it for last. The numbers are the seeding ranks within the group (1 = the strongest pair).
Group of 4: 6 matches in total, 3 per pair.
Round 1
1 v 4
2 v 3
Round 2
1 v 3
2 v 4
Round 3
1 v 2
3 v 4
This order is a custom, taken from the FFT model (the « Poules, formats courts et formule multi-chances » guide, 2016): the padel Guide de la compétition sets no order for group matches.
Group size and the 3-match minimum
Every pair plays every other pair in its group. A pair must be able to play at least 3 matches: a group of 3 only gives 2, so it is always followed by a placement match or a final draw. From 4 pairs, the group is enough. Padel Clash templates use groups of 3 to 6 pairs.
A pair that withdraws without a medical reason before playing its 3 matches is ranked last in the tournament.
